Rust Dyeing

I used a steel wool pad for these rust dyeing experiments. I unrolled the pad, put it on top of two pieces of white fabric, wetted it with lots of water and a little vinegar. I rolled everything back and put it in a plastic bag. After one day, it was already very rusty. This is the fabric that was close to the pad.
This is the second piece of fabric, the one that wasn't touching the pad.
After the first experiment, I did it again, but I used just one layer of fabric. I forgot about it for two days. Today I opened the bag... The pad has fallen apart, and the result is completely different from the first time.
Here's a detail. I like the texture very much.
Another piece of fabric is still rusting, folded around an old tool. But the process seems to be much slower. I'm going to leave it for one or two more days.

This rust fabric is fantastic Francoise. Do you know what you are going to use it for yet? I didn't realise you could get such depth of colour with this method. Its brilliant.

Thanks for this tip. I wondered how I could try rust dyeing and not have anything rusty to use. Something else to add to my every growing list of things to try.

I am loving your rust dyeing experiments. At the moment I am trying this for the first time. I have some fabric in a bucket and a plastic bowl with a variety of rusty things. I'm hoping that I get interesting results like these!

Awesome rusty fabrics!!! I'm so glad you told us how you did it. I am going to buy Brilo pads.

Your rust dying is very interesting. If you flip the first one 90 degrees, upside down, you can see a face.

Have you noticed any problems with the fibers? I have had linen rust through when the rust color got too intense>
